Check Out the 2017 Corolla Updates

Toyota decided to honor the Corolla's 50th Anniversary with a number of changes including a new limited edition 50th Anniversary Special Edition. This new trim level builds on the existing Corolla SE, adding some special badging along with 17-inch alloy wheels and interior accents in both black and black cherry. Additionally, this model has a 7-inch touchscreen for Entune™. While the 2017 model has the same overall shape, the lower grille is larger. It now features the hexagonal shape of other Toyota models. The bumper's outer portions seem more organic and the headlights were reshaped. In the rear, you will also notice new taillight designs. Inside, the 2017 Corolla has upgraded seat fabric, newly available color combinations, gauges, circular outboard air vents, and updated climate controls.

The biggest changes from the 2016 to 2017 Corolla come in the list of features, mostly in the form of the newly standard Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P). The TSS-P system was not even available on the previous model year. Included in this system is adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, steering assist, pedestrian detection, as part of automatic braking and forward collision warning, and automatic high beams. Every model also comes standard with bi-LED headlamps and a rearview camera.

A Look Back at 50 Years of the Toyota Corolla

The Corolla has officially been around for 50 years with the first generation starting as a 1966 model. Moving throughout the Corolla's history, you will notice some common themes, including increases in power and size of the sedan for every generation. The first generation had a 4-speed transmission and water-cooled inline 4-cylinder, which was a huge advance for Toyota.

The third generation began in 1974 during the American fuel crisis. This helped the Corolla since it had an efficient design, but it still had to contend with increasing competition. For the fifth generation in 1983, Toyota really made a mark, selling roughly 3.3 million of these models worldwide. Most of these Corollas were built with front-wheel drive, and had a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 90 or 112 horsepower.

Although the seventh generation started in 1991, it did not make it to the US until 1993. Unfortunately, it was a bit boring, yet delivered the affordability and reliability that drivers craved. The 1995 Corolla was built in North America, and by the tenth generation, the Corolla had become fun and efficient, with extra charm and style arriving in 2014 for the eleventh generation.
