How often is replacement needed?

  • Inspection of tires is recommended at each regular service visit, however, there are other moments when it is either needed or should be conducted, some of which we’ll explore in the next section.
  • In addition to being inspected at each regular service visit, it’s recommended to have tires inspected once a month to better stay on top of their health. Now that could increase in frequency depending on other factors.
  • Frequent tire inspection is important if you live in a colder climate, drive long distances regularly, or often encounter bumpy roads. If you’re a long-distance driver, it’s encouraged to invest in a premium-level tire to ensure that you’ll have little to no issues traversing those distances.

Indicators replacement may be needed:

  • The tire tread wear indicator is a helpful gauge for tire replacement, but there is also another way to test your tires. This is referred to as either the penny test or quarter test, depending on the coin you use. If using a penny, you’ll want to turn it so that Lincoln’s head points downwards into the tread. If you see his head disappear into the ribbing, then this means it’s time for new tires as the tread is below 2/32”.
  • The quarter test is like the penny, but this time you’ll want to have Washington’s head pointed down into the tread. If the tread touches his head, it means you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining. You should be concerned when/if the tread does not reach his head at all.
  • Cuts, tears, bubbles, cracking, or uneven treadwear. These can be done on your own as they’re easy to notice or experience.
  • Age of the tires (DOT number). Tires grow old too, and with age you’ll notice some of the above effects.
  • Poor ride quality.

Why is it important?

  • Safety, first and foremost. Your tires play a large part in whether your driving experiences are going to be safe and secure or unnecessarily dangerous.
  • Worn tires have an adverse effect on acceleration, braking, and cornering of vehicles. This reflects the poor ride quality we mentioned above. Of the three, braking is especially important as the quality of your tires can be the determining factor between having a collision event or not.
  • New tires drastically improve stopping distance, which gives you an advantage as well as peace of mind.
  • See the illustration below for stopping distance comparison:
